Tabla

Lessons

When I was four years old, around the time I began to play the classical guitar, I also began to learn to play the tabla (Indian twin hand drums). The physicality and beautiful sound of the tabla are the reasons I have kept with the instrument for so long. It has kept me grounded in my Sikhism.

Shabad

One of the primary ways I perform the tabla is as accompaniment to a shabad (Sikh religious hymn) in our gurudwara (Sikh place of worship). Often, it is my older sister playing the vaja (harmonium) while singing.

Community

At our local gurdwara, I am a volunteer instructor of tabla to young Sikh students. I love working with them as I am able to foster a love for the instrument that I have cherished so much.
