Steelpan
CYSO Kaiso Steel OrchestraI first (accidentally) began playing the steelpan seven year ago. I had no idea what the instrument was going into the band, but I found an amazing tight-knit community playing beautiful and unique instruments. Since then, I advanced to the most advanced orchestra, and learned complex pieces and music theory. Playing the steelpan has showed me what it means to be a part of a team, and it has made me a far more confident and musical person!

PerformancesDuring my time on the Kaiso orchestra, we have performed in gorgeous venues, like Chicago’s Navy Pier, Chicago Union Station, Millenium Park, Chicago's Cultural Center, The Jam (WCIU’s morning show), and more.

Educational Concerts
Every year, the we give a series of performances to underserved children in Chicago who do not have easy access to a good music education. Along with pieces we have prepared, these performances also include speeches that we give on music theory and the history of the steelpan. We play popular songs that all of the students can sing along to, allowing them to recognize certain music theory concepts we introduce. My part in these concerts have ranged from covering the history of Trinidadian street music to what syncopation is in music.
