Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Work
Diversity Advisory CommitteeAs the only turban-wearing student in my school, I have found my voice against adversity and have committed myself to helping others do the same. I was selected as one of four student representatives on the Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC), made up of the University of Chicago Laboratory School's faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and board members. I have represented the student body's voice on this committee since my freshman year, and we have made significant progress towards ensuring Lab is a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community. In order to meaningfully represent the views of students at my high school in the DAC, I have led open forums among the student body. One of the primary focuses of my work on the DAC has been drafting, evaluating, and adjusting the Diversity Action Plan for my high school (link on the right).

Brave ConferenceAnother major avenue I have been able to make a difference with this work through is the Becoming Racially Aware and Valuing Ethnicity (BRAVE) Conference board. BRAVE is a conference held in mid-April to early May, devoted to diving into cultural and ethnic issues and providing a safe place for open discussion for the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools students through student-led workshops and guest speakers. This past year, the theme of the conference was "understanding and overcoming internalized and generational racism within ourselves, others, and society." I led workshops for students on how racism played a role in the 2020 United States presidential election along with the 2021 United States Capitol attack, along with workshops on racism in healthcare. This year, as one of the chairs of the board, I will be directing and guiding the board to run yet another successful BRAVE conference, this time with both middle and high school students. Please check out the BRAVE website on the right!
